New Visions: A Deeper Look at the American Dream
The majority of the EVC documentary crew was not born in the United States. Our students immigrated to New York City from all over the world. Yet, they came to America for the same reason -- the American Dream. In this film, they turn their cameras on themselves and fellow immigrants in the community to tell their own stories of immigration and struggle. Encountering more discrimination and less opportunity than they expected, they find with all its complexities and contradictions that the American Dream is more a myth than reality in their lives.

53
I’m in my 54th year. This piece is a reflection on what it means to have come this far. It combines elements of dance, controlled animation, synthesised and transformed sound, vocalisations and spoken word to explore the physical, the personal and the political. It celebrates the fact that change is not only possible, but also inevitable on all of those levels. It is a statement of what it is to be a survivor and not to have given up on the idea of resistance. We cannot deny change, but we can choose how we react, and by our actions set an example to others. The ripples will influence the changes. All that is necessary is for us to give ourselves that permission, because it cannot and will not come from anywhere else.
